Lame Racks:

I have yet to use a bike rack I like.

Almost all racks are designed to lock the frame and the front wheel. However, most bikes today feature handy, quick-release mechanisms on the front and rear wheels. Given that it takes, oh, about 6 seconds to remove a bike's rear wheel (worth about $200 - well over the value of the front wheel) I can only assume these racks were designed in a time when quick-release rear wheels didn’t exist, or were made by people who never lock up their own bikes. College campuses are littered with bicycles – diligently locked to racks in the prescribed fashion – with their rear wheel missing (or worse, with only a wheel locked and the rest of the bike gone).

The IDSA award-winning "ribbon rack."

The currently vogue "Coat Hanger" Rack. A steal at $600 a piece.

Who designs these things?

A horrible frame-and-wheels rack: notice the actual use.
