Sail on the Petrel

July 14th, 1999

Jan's stepbrother Stephen Kolozsvary occasionally sails with the Petrel, a wooden yawl, out of Manhattan's North Cove. He took the two of us, along with Anik (Stephen's wife) and Jon Williams (Jan's stepsister Anne's husband), out for great little sunset cruise in New York harbor. In contrast the sweltering heat of the previous week, we had an absolutely perfect evening, with clear sun but a cool breeze.

The Petrel's crew were nice enough to let us take turns at the helm. Here Jon Williams takes the wheel while first mate Jan stands behind. Jon got to do cool stuff like tack and thread the ship between oncoming Staten Island ferries, while Jan's only job on his three minute watch was to just hold the course.
