The Big Island

Our next stop is the Big Island of Hawai'i. Last year in Mongolia we met a couple who live on the island, Peter and Helen Gram. While we're on the island, they take us on a hike—a real hike, not the wimpy Iao Needle kind—to the rim of the island's isolated and stunningly green Waipio valley.

For a good portion of the hike, we follow an old irrigation aqueduct, shown here crossing a bridge.

Peter and Helen look out over the Waipio valley.

One of Waipio's many waterfalls.
