Maui, continued

We ask the concierge at our Maui hotel if they can recommend a nice hike. They tell us about an interesting pinnacle called the Iao Needle that's worth checking out. We gear up for an afternoon hike, then drive to the Iao Valley to check out the needle.

Sunny elsewhere on Maui, but misty at the Iao Needle

At the trailhead, we see a map showing the route to the Needle. There aren't any distances posted on the map, but it sounds like the hike is very short, only something like 30 minutes from the start. Even this turns out to be a dramatic overstatement—we reach the end of the trail in about five minutes.

Angela, not exactly worn out by the five minute trek to the Needle viewpoint

Back at our hotel, it turns out we're on Maui during the Maui Film Festival. This isn't a particularly big event (yet), but we have fun watching the final movie of the festival on a golf course near our hotel. The sunsets on Maui are a pretty good show too.
