The Big Island, continuedPeter and Helen suggest we spend a day at Kealakekua Bay, and this turns out to be a great idea. We rent a sea kayak, and kayak across the bay to a protected coral reef. Along the way, we see a pod of spinner dolphins playing and jumping out of the water. We eventually reach and tie up at Captain Cook Monument (where the exploring Cook met his end).
We have a great morning of snorkeling, then kayak back across the bay. From there we make a short drive to Pu'uhonua O Honaunau. A long time ago this place served as a sanctuary where lawbreakers could seek absolution. Now it's a pretty oceanside area to walk around.
