The Big Island, continued

Peter and Helen suggest we spend a day at Kealakekua Bay, and this turns out to be a great idea. We rent a sea kayak, and kayak across the bay to a protected coral reef. Along the way, we see a pod of spinner dolphins playing and jumping out of the water. We eventually reach and tie up at Captain Cook Monument (where the exploring Cook met his end).

The old landing at Captain Cook Monument.

We have a great morning of snorkeling, then kayak back across the bay. From there we make a short drive to Pu'uhonua O Honaunau. A long time ago this place served as a sanctuary where lawbreakers could seek absolution. Now it's a pretty oceanside area to walk around.
