HawaiiJune 14–27, 2001
Since we can foresee a day in the not-to-distant future when our ability to travel will be curtailed, we decide to take a trip back to Hawaii in the summer of 2001. MauiOur first stop is Maui, where we spend a morning sailing out to Molokini for some diving and snorkeling. We go with Trilogy Expeditions, an outfit we've sailed with before and enjoyed. On the boat, Angela overhears a young couple speaking Japanese, and we befriend Aki and Maki Kusanagi. They're on their honeymoon, after which they're moving from Japan to the States to work in Boston.
Once we get to Molokini, Jan goes diving with a dive master named Patty. As they're getting ready to jump in, Patty assures Jan, "I'm a marine biologist, so I know the names of all the fish". She points to some fish. "There's Fred, Alice, Mary...". Despite the cornball humor, the dive's great and there are indeed a ton of fish: gray tipped reef sharks, a white tipped reef shark resting in cave, cornet fish, garden eels waving like kelp, tang with orange spines, blue unicorn fish, big jacks, and huge parrotfish.
